Sloke One and Billie Buck Discuss Their Art This Week on The Austin Chronicle Show
Graffiti and gig poster art take the stage in new exhibits

You'll find fine art hanging on plenty of walls around Austin, but this weekend, the emphasis is on two art forms from the street.
Joining us this week on our KOOP 91.7 FM show are two artists with dueling opening exhibitions. First up, Nate "Sloke" Nordstrom. Sloke grew up in Austin and learned what he could accomplish with a can of spray paint under the tutelage of the pioneering Austin graffiti artist Skam. Sloke and Skam's work, as well as many other Austin graffiti artists will be presented in a new show curated by Sloke, "Piecing It Together: Austin Graffiti Art 1984-2004," opening today, Jan. 24, at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center.
The opening reception for "Piecing It Together" takes place tonight, 7-10pm, and the show will be on display through March 28. Read more about it in this week's cover story by Rachel Koper.
In the second half of the program, I cede the mic to "Faster Than Sound" columnist Rachel Rascoe, who interviewed poster artist Billie Buck in her column this week and continued the conversation in the KOOP studio. Buck's first-ever exhibit, "Hot Soup," has its opening reception on Sunday, 2-6pm, at the Austin Museum of Popular Culture (formerly SouthPop), and continues through March 29. In addition to winning awards for her gig poster art (she's a two-time Best Poster Artist winner in the Austin Music Poll, up again for the accolade this year, and also designed this year's Austin Music Awards poster), Billie Buck is a member of Sailor Poon; the band's "White Male Meltdown" ushered us off the air this week.
By the way, Rachel and host station KOOP 91.7 FM are also finalists in this year's Austin Music Poll. If you want to cast a ballot for any of them, you'll need to get on that – voting closes this Tuesday, Jan. 28, at midnight.
